Yes because U need it so U can point the WII remote to aim

                I I I
               V V V

The IR on the end of the Wiimote reads the 2 LED lights in the sensor bar. It doesn't matter if it's reading the two LED lights in the sensor bar or two candles it will still work. This doesn't mean it's a scam however, the sensor bar is a very important part of the system.

To the person talking about "6 axis", the PS3 doesn't have IR we are talking about two different things here. Get a clue! And the Wiimote can be read from up to 50 feet away but who the hell plays from more then 10 feet away?

And to all the PS3 Homers that say get a PS3. What happened last month to your beloved PS3. PS3 sales last month were under 9K and the Wii sold 100K.

well first off. it really isnt a scam. it comes right in the box when you buy a NEW wii.
and i'm not sure about candles as a sensor bar :/
just buy a new wii. its only about 250
or google "wii deals" you can find some for like 30-50 dollars less with everything still in it!
oh yeah and if you maybe want to save
wait till the holidays or christmas.
I'm pretty sure theres going to be some good bundles with it :D

but if you want a console you should go with a PS3.
its the best i ever had

OMG ! You guys have to use sensor "boosters" poor nintendo followers. When will N stop toying with you guys. PS3 6 axis, vs the whys 2 axis or 2? My controller is Bluetooth. Man I play games like 30-35 feet away. Have you tried the 6 axis yet? what did you think of it? I tried the whys. I find it really hard to use.

"Avoid sources of infrared light in the game play area such as electric, propane or kerosene heaters, flames from fireplaces or candles, and stoves or other sources of heat."

Why would they put this on their web site? Because the Wiimote WILL pick up candles. The only reason the sensor bar plugs into the Wii is for a power source for the two LED lights inside of it. The Wii isn't sending or receiving info with the sensor bar it does that with the Wiimote. My wireless sensor bar has no plug for the Wii it uses batteries and when I turn it on the LED lights come on. That is all the IR in the Wiimote is looking for, light/heat and candles make both of those.

The 'sensor bar' is actually just a pair infrared lights in a bar. The actual sensor is in the Wiimote which looks for those infrared lights.

On a very basic level, infrared light is just heat, so you could use anything that generates the kind of heat that the wiimote is looking for. That's why candles work.

i wasn't aware that you could plug candles into a wii system. what type of plugin comes with candles? from what i've read, wiimotes have bluetooth & you can hack it to be used as a mouse for your pc. you can't hack a ps3. no, it's not a scam because your wii won't pick up the wiimotes without the sensor bar no matter what you do with candles.

OMG candles do work! I didn't believe it so I just tried. I used two small candles and put them on top of my TV were the lights in the sensor bar would have been if it was still there, I unplugged and removed it. Sure enough the Wii still works just fine.

So....

Can you use candles for a sensor bar?
yes

Is the sensor bar a scam?
No, the Wiimote needs that light source and it isn't like Nintendo can tell people to use candles.
