The only problem with a controller as an IR source is that most of them don't produce IR light unless a button is being pressed. I travel with my Wii so I bought an extra sensor bar at Best Buy ($20) it has a cable and batteries so I don't have to plug it into the Wii unless it's batteries are dead and if the power cable breaks I can run it on batteries.
